Hi All,
Did you know that bi-carbonate soda, that lowly ingredient taking up space on your cupboard shelf, has some really handy uses! It can be used for so many things, and this list is just the tip of the iceberg. Take a look and, who knows, you might find this lowly ingredient becoming an essential part of your daily tasks.
Half way through making a cake and realize that you’ve run out of baking powder, don’t worry, bi-carb comes to the rescue! Baking powder can be replaced by bi-carb (bi-carbonate soda) and cream of tartar, at a ratio of one part bi-carb to two parts cream of tartar.
2. Toothpaste
This may sound strange, but bi-carb makes an excellent tooth powder. You can use it by itself, by applying straight to a rinsed toothbrush. Or, if that is too much for you, you can mix it up with a bit of coconut oil and a few drops of peppermint essence to make it more like traditional toothpaste.
Bi-carb can ease the pain of a bite or sting. Just mix up the bi-carb with some water to form a paste and apply to the offending spot. Also helps with stinging nettles and chicken pox.
4. Replace Eggs
If you are making a fruit cake and you run out of eggs, you can mix ½ teaspoon of bi-carb with one tablespoon of vinegar and use this to replace two eggs. Just make sure that you put this mixture in as the last ingredient.
By adding ½ teaspoon bi-carb to 150ml of fresh milk, you can make substitute sour milk for using in a recipe. You can also replace buttermilk this way.
6. Keep Veggies Green
If you want to preserve the colour of your green vegetables when you are cooking them, just add a pinch of bi-carb to your cooking water with some salt to taste.
7. Sweeten Rancid Butter
If your butter has gone a bit rancid and you want to try and salvage it, try soaking it in some cold water for about two hours with a pinch of bi-carb.
8. Clean Carpet Stains
Carpet stains can often be improved by treating with a paste made from bi-carb and water.
And now you know just how handy Bicarb Soda can be!
